⇨ In the above eight pollutants, atmospheric gases are carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulphur dioxide (SO2).

10Q) Which of the following are known as the lighthouse of the universe?

Show/Hide The Explanation of Answer

⇨ Pulsars are indeed often referred to as the "lighthouses of the universe" due to their distinctive characteristics and the important role they play in astronomy. Here are a few reasons why pulsars are considered as such:

⇨ Pulsating Signals:

⇨ Pulsars are highly magnetized rotating neutron stars that emit beams of electromagnetic radiation. These beams are emitted along the magnetic axis of the neutron star and are only visible when they are aligned with Earth. As the neutron star rotates, the beam of radiation appears to pulse on and off, creating a regular pattern of signals. This pulsating nature of their emissions is similar to the way a lighthouse emits periodic flashes of light, hence the comparison.

⇨ Precise Timing:

⇨ Pulsars exhibit an exceptional regularity in their pulsations. The intervals between pulses are incredibly stable, making them reliable celestial clocks. Astronomers can use pulsars to accurately measure time intervals, much like how a lighthouse's beam serves as a reference for measuring time. This precision allows for a wide range of scientific studies, including tests of general relativity, studies of stellar evolution, and even the search for gravitational waves.

⇨ Navigation and Spacecraft Positioning:

⇨ The precise timing of pulsar signals can be used for navigation and spacecraft positioning. Just as ships and aircraft use lighthouses as navigational aids, spacecraft can utilize the signals from pulsars to determine their position in space. Pulsar-based navigation, known as X-ray pulsar-based navigation (XNAV), has the potential to provide autonomous navigation for deep-space missions.

⇨ Cosmological Probes:

⇨ Pulsars are excellent tools for probing various cosmological phenomena. They can be used to study the interstellar medium, the behavior of matter under extreme conditions, and the properties of gravity. Pulsars in binary systems have been instrumental in the detection and confirmation of gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of spacetime caused by the merger of massive objects.

⇨ Astronomical Timekeeping:

⇨ Pulsars serve as valuable natural clocks in the universe. The stability and predictability of their pulses make them useful for calibrating and verifying the accuracy of terrestrial atomic clocks used in astronomy and other scientific measurements. Pulsar observations have been used to refine our understanding of timekeeping systems and to improve the accuracy of atomic clocks.

⇨ These factors, among others, contribute to the comparison of pulsars as the "lighthouses of the universe." Their distinct properties make them invaluable tools for studying the cosmos, navigating in space, and advancing our knowledge of fundamental physics.
